# Model Context Protocol (MCP)

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI assistants such as Claude read data and use tools in other software.

The protocol defines how an assistant connects to an outside system. The system runs an MCP server that describes its tools, such as “list people” or “show the funnel”, and the assistant calls those tools when a question needs them. Anthropic introduced MCP as an open standard in 2024\. Claude, Cursor and many other clients speak it, so one server works with all of them.

What an assistant may do through MCP is decided by the server. A careful server asks the person to sign in, separates reading from changing, and records what the assistant did.

The default is read-only. Every change needs “May change setup” for that connection, and anything that changes what live visitors see, such as turning a flag on or starting an experiment, also needs “May turn flags on and off”. Both are off by default. Every call is recorded, every change is audited, and agents never delete.
